Full Name: Andreas Mavrommatis

 

Ambassador Mavrommatis is a member of the IIGEP. He is a former Chairman and member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee (1977-1997), former President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (1980), and has been a member of the United Nations Committee against Torture since 1997. Ambassador Mavrommatis was Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus from 1983 to 1989, serving as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Nations in both Geneva and New York from 1975 to 1982 and from 1989 to 1992. From 1958 to 1970, Ambassador Mavrommatis served on the Cyprus Bench before joining the Government as Cabinet Minister for Labour and Social Insurance (1970 - 1972).


Ambassador Mavrommatis was born in Larnaca, Cyprus in 1932. He was called to the Bar at Lincoln ’s Inn, London in 1954. Ambassador Mavrommatis has participated in seminars, round tables and symposiums on human rights in several parts of the world and has given lectures and written several monographs and articles on human rights. Ambassador Mavrommatis lives in Cyprus .
